Awaiting the birth of baby robins
It seems a mother robin has built a nest in one of our huge spruce trees but at eye level so that we can see. She is totally devoted at this point and sits with her eggs protecting the nest like a good mother bird, day in and day out.
Whenever we are near or are with our leashed Jack Russell dogs she leaves the nest for a brief moment and comes back. I am not sure why she flees but she must believe that we are a danger factor for her. Hopefully she will trust us soon. We would never intrude or touch the nest nor the eggs. I can hardly wait to hear the cheep, cheep, cheep of the new born baby robins and also get to watch her feed them…..
I do not have pictures and may not ever have pictures of Miss Robin Red Breast and her nest full of eggs. It may not be wise, so at this moment I cannot share the visual with you because interferring with nature is a criminal offense on our land.
Tis mating season for our fish in the Pond
It appears that we have some of our fish are in mating dances. Some of of girl fish appear to be very full of eggs in their back pouches and the males are following them constantly.
For the first time, last year we had three groups of baby fish born for a total of 14 new ones. Everyone of them survived the winter even though they were frozen solid. We were totally shocked to see all 35 of them in the spring. We didn’t know if the baby fish would be strong enough to withstand our brutal winter.
Now with all 35 fish in the pond, if we start to have a few new baby fish it appears that we will have to begin transferring some of the fish to the top pond to make room for them all. Good grief, how exciting is this!!!!!
All my tulips are missing……
We have discovered that we have an infestation of moles in our front garden. These moles have taken it upon themselves to eat all of my tulips….every friggin’ one of them. It wasn’t until Ray and I took a drive on Sunday for Mother’s Day in the 1967 El Camino and I got to see everyone else’s garden & realized that all the tulips were up everywhere else.
Once we got back home I started to inspect the myriad of holes everywhere in the garden and in front of the porch and then truly realized what yhad happened. The moles have not eaten the hundreds of daffodils and I am praying they do not destroy my 15 year old peony plant which is magnificent.
Oh the woes of gardeners and little ratty moles.
My son, Ash tell me I will have to call a pesticide company to rid the yard of these little vermin. He says that nothing else will work….Mr Weed Man…I will be calling you shortly.
More to come on the partnering and mating going on in the pond….stay tuned
